What’s the deal with Puberty?

Teen Issues

Puberty is the process of physical and hormonal changes that occur in the body as a person becomes an adult. It usually begins between the ages of 8 and 14 for girls and between the ages of 9 and 16 for boys.

During puberty, the body goes through a number of changes, including:

  1. Physical growth: During puberty, the body grows and develops at a faster rate. Girls typically experience a growth spurt in height and weight, and boys experience an increase in muscle mass.

  2. Sexual development: Puberty also marks the beginning of sexual development. Girls will develop breasts, and boys will develop facial hair and a deeper voice.

  3. Hormonal changes: The body begins producing higher levels of hormones such as estrogen and testosterone, which can cause mood swings and changes in body odor.

  4. Reproductive system development: Puberty also marks the development of the reproductive system, which includes the ovaries in girls and the testicles in boys.

Puberty can be a confusing and overwhelming time for teenagers as they navigate these physical and emotional changes. It’s important for parents and caregivers to be supportive and understanding during this time and to provide accurate information about the changes that are occurring.
